I have been a maker of icons in all sorts of materials for about forty years. For me this is both a ministry to my brethren and prayer to God using matter.  I was raised in New Zealand in an artistic family and became a professional sculptor at the age of 21.

On becoming a member of the Orthodox Church in 1983 I returned to my birthplace, England,  and began making icons, first in wood, and in due course also in egg tempera, mosaic, stone, fresco and metal. The more I learn the more I  know I don’t know!

I have also always enjoyed writing. Icons distill the essence and present a single face, while writing allows one to tease out more detail. A book on the development and meaning of festal icons that I have been working on over the past three years is  due to be published by Christmas.

Having had to be largely self-taught, I have felt obliged to help others learn the faster and more sensible way, and have therefore also been involved in teaching, in particular a three year part-time course with Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts.
