I trained as a painter at art school in the 1970s. However, I later spent 40 years working as a teacher, social worker and psychotherapist in London. I became interested in spiritual aspects of art and in icons as a focus for prayer and contemplation.
I received Aidan Hart’s book about icon painting as a gift some years ago – but only took it up to look at and learn from seriously at the beginning of the pandemic.
The icon of St Francis was my first attempt. I was inspired by the writings of Richard Rohr, an American Franciscan Friar.
St Peregrine was written after two close family members had been diagnosed with cancer.
St Leonard was commissioned by the vicar of the local parish church for its St Leonard chapel, which is where it now hangs.
The Virgin Mary with Infant Jesus was written as a gift for my wife last Christmas 2020.
These are my first faltering attempts at writing icons (which are all copies of existing icons) and I have had no formal training/ instruction to date. I look forward to attending Aidan Hart’s forthcoming (as I write this) five-day workshop in September 2021.
