I am an amateur icon painter I have done courses with Sr Annette Lawrence, Ian Knowles and Peter Murphy. I am an Anglican priest, counsellor / psychotherapist and spiritual director working for the Diocese of York. I have been drawn to icons for many years so eventually decided to paint them.  I prepare my own boards and work in egg tempera, with water or oil gilding.

Painting an icon is for me a meditative process. The preparation includes  reflection in the subject, praying and stilling myself is part of the process. My results are variable, but the painting is an offering of sorts.  If the icon can be an aid to awareness of God for someone that is a joy.

The proceeds of any sales go to the charity “The Friends of the African Sisters (CMM) of St Mary” supporting the ministry in the communities of CMM sisters in Tanzania.

Icons:

St Anthony and the desert fathers and mothers inspire me with their incisive spirituality so I decided to paint an icon of St Anthony using egg tempera and gold leaf on gessoed board.

The Mandylion legend connects us both to the image of Christ and Christ as healer. This was also part of an on-line course with Ian Knowles using egg tempera, gold leaf inset with carnelian cabochons on gessoed plywood.

I was moved to start the icon of the Baptism of Christ one January when we celebrated Christ’s baptism. I used egg tempera and gold leaf on gessoed plywood.
