The photograph was taken before the addition of the Russian name for this icon ‘The Unsleeping Eye’.

A similar work which is more familiar is ‘Christ Anapeson’, without the ‘Paradise’ background and shows Christ, the Lion of Judah with his Mother and an Angel by his side.

An excerpt from the psalm applied to this icon, attributed to King David reads ‘Behold, He shall not slumber nor shall he sleep, He that keepeth Israel ‘

The icon was made in one of the annual Ikonothea Workshops in Vatoussa, Lesvos ,under the guidance of Elena Antonova who offers classes there each June.
