Isobel Cherry

I am a retired Primary School teacher, having taught in London and then for 21 years at Chesham Preparatory School.  I studied Art at A Level but took Theology at college.   We had an inspirational Art teacher who took us on an Art trip to Italy where I was introduced to Giotto, Cimabue and Fra Angelico. Our teacher was passionate about  St Francis of Assisi; a man whose vision of God’s beautiful world and our place in it is very pertinent for us today. This has all had a profound and lasting impression on me.

Whilst on holiday with my mother in Glastonbury I bought a little icon and later saw icons in Crete, Mount Athos and Cyprus. In 2012, I went to hear my daughter-in-law sing in St Mary’s Church in Aylesbury and saw a leaflet advertising Icon Painting Classes with Constantina Wood. She became my first icon teacher and I realised I had wanted to  learn to paint icons for a long time. When she stopped teaching she recommended Sister Esther and Peter Murphy. I have enjoyed several courses with Peter Murphy both in Canterbury and at West Dean College. I have had the great privilege of going on Icon Painting Retreats at Turvey Abbey and learning from Sister Esther. I paint independently at home and also with a friend but I really value spending the time on an Icon Painting course.
