I’ve admired a painting of St Seraphim of Sarov with a bear for a while and was interested to learn more about him and his life. I like the stillness and quiet there is when writing an icon. There was a peacefulness and restfulness when writing St Seraphim of Serov. I wanted to write an icon with St Seraphim holding his prayer rope. The icon is on a prepared gessoed, lime wood panel and is 26mm thick. The background is 23carat gold. The pigments I used are English light red, light yellow ochre, titanium white, burnt umber and ivory black.

My priest started me off in iconography in 2019. Since then I’ve read books and watched You Tube videos. Recently my husband asked me to write an icon for our 35th Wedding Anniversary. He asked our eldest son which saint shared the date of our anniversary. He was delighted to discover it was Andrei Rublev and asked me to write the Hospitality of Abraham. It is on a prepared gessoed mdf board, 9 mm thickness. I used 23 carat gold, pigments are cadmium deep red, light yellow ochre, italian warm ochre, titanium white green, english light red, burnt sienna, burnt umber, ivory black and lapis lazula dark.

Icons:

St Seraphim of Sarov   17 x 13cm   (NFS)
The Hospitality of Abraham     25.4 x 20.3cm (NFS)
