Julie Ahern

Julie Ahern is a teaching assistant based in Manchester and has been a student of Efrem Carrasco since 2010.

She is Roman Catholic and has always loved icons since her mum brought her a Hodegetria on a trip to Walsingham.

Every time she begins a new  icon she remembers again what a privilege it is to be able to pray through the act of painting.

Icons:

St Margaret of Scotland 17 x 11cm (NFS)
Watercolour and gold leaf on paper. This was a commission. Margaret had a love  of books, so I decided to combine the traditional representation of a queen from medieval illuminations with the image of St John the Evangelist from Margaret’s own book of Gospels, which is held at the Bodleian Library. The book was dropped in a river by a servant, and miraculously recovered, intact and clean.

St Teresa of Avila 25 x 18cm (NFS)
Egg tempera and gold leaf on board. This was also a commission and completed just before lockdown. It was a gift for a lady with a devotion to Teresa, and I am glad it was completed in time to keep her company during that first long period of  isolation. The client wanted the icon to include the city walls and the four posts. I also felt it was important for Teresa’s age and wisdom to be reflected in the face.

Archangel Gabriel  20 x 16cm £200
Egg tempera and gold leaf on board.
