Ka-yee Chan

I joined Sr Esther’s icon retreat at Turvey in 2018 and completed my very first icon St  Michael.   As a very worrying mum about my “children” on their journey into adulthood, I found myself consecrating them throughout the “painting-in-silence” process…. each stroke became a prayer said and felt like a sacred presentation of my children and other troubled young adults to St Michael for protection. The deep contemplative process had drawn me into a mystic closeness and surrender to God … I experienced indescribable deep peace.

In 2019, I joined another retreat at Turvey and was compelled to paint The Holy Family as I wished to pray for and consecrate our family as a whole. I made my own painting gesso board which itself was a super contemplative process.  During the five months of painting, I experienced some very special moments. One very special connection was with St Joseph when I painted his grey hair – I connected with a deep sense of weariness, confusion and pressure that he had to face… tears kept running down washing out my own weariness and confusion as a mum. I learnt from St Joseph that his total pure trust and obedience took him through his “parenting role” as Jesus’ holy guardian on earth. I felt I have St Joseph’s understanding and total support. It was such a powerful experience!
