I was captivated by the beauty of icons in the 1970s when I first saw one in a historic church on my travels as an American student in Europe.  Despite having no artistic inclination or experience, I told myself I would paint one someday.

The day after I retired in 2016, I googled ‘icon painting near me’ and found Sister Esther at Turvey Abbey, quite near where I live. She has been my mentor and has opened up a new world for me.

I have written 6 icons now and have learned so much more than painting techniques. The historical, spiritual and devotional aspects of iconography, as well as the fellowship of our iconography group are a constant inspiration.

The icon of St. Mary Magdalene was written in 2019 for my nephew, at his request after seeing my previous rendition in 2018.   Lockdown showed me how much I have yet to learn!  I quickly became “stuck” without hands-on guidance, so only managed to write one icon in all that time – St Catherine of Alexandria.

Icons:

St Mary Magdelene    30 x 21cm   (NFS)
St Catherine of Alexandria    21 x 14.5cm   (NFS)
