Religious art has always been part of my experience of life and faith in that it was always all around me – whether at school, in parishes, or the wider world. Some years ago, I was seeking a new direction in life and found icon painting.

After  participating in short courses run by Peter Murphy at St. Peter’s Centre for Sacred Art, Canterbury, and I decided to join Peter’s Iconostasis course. Over a period of three years, the Iconostasis course focuses on learning how to paint icons in the Byzantine style, studying the history of iconography, and exploring the spirituality of icon painting.  Since completing the course, I have continued to paint and have given talks and held exhibitions locally. The two Annunciation panels included in this exhibition form one piece and are an example of Royal Doors.

Archangel Michael is a favourite subject of mine so I like to paint different versions of him; here he is seen in the classic attitude of worship.

I painted St Bonaventure to reflect two sides of the heritage of the Franciscans:  learning and simplicity.
